Knitted Together Fashion Show

Our DIY Fashion Show on 14th February 2024 shared and celebrated costume and fashion artwork designed and made by Shallal artists.

Some of us at Shallal have dreamed for years of making clothes and costumes and having a fashion show. We've been learning about working sustainably, so we explored the idea of Slow Fashion and using recycled and natural materials.

Clay

In October 2017 Shallal 2 was invited back to Wheal Martyn to perform again after the success of their Beautiful Dirt show in April

The new show Clay, again drew inspiration from clay mining heritage at Wheal Martyn museum. Shallal 2 was joined by dancers from Shallal's Out There dance group in Liskeard as well as young people from Mevagissey School Dance Club, Doubletrees School and St Austell Home Ed Group.

Afterwards Wheal Martyn education officer Gemma Martin said:

Beautiful Dirt

Beautiful Dirt was an original performance by Shallal 2 community performance dance company at Wheal Martyn china clay mining museum

Shallal 2 researched the history behind Wheal Martyn as inspiration for their dance pieces. Shallal 2 was joined by dancers from Shallal's Out There dance group in Liskeard.

Wheal Martyn was extremely pleased with the performance. Education officer Gemma Martin said this:

Picture It

Picture It was a show by Shallal 2 community dance company at Falmouth Art Gallery on 12th December 2018. The performance was inspired by pictures exhibited in the gallery.

Many thanks to Falmouth Art Gallery for their continued and valuable support.

Cornish Doorways show

The Cornish Doorways show was part of Shallal's Cornish Doorways project 2015-2018

The show was devised by Shallal Dance Theatre especially to be performed outside Godolphin House (National Trust). The house's grand portico was a gift for inspiring performance ideas, as were the ghost stories and colourful stories of the lives of people who had lived there in past centuries.

Ladders and Footprints

Ladders and Footprints was a show devised by Shallal Dance Theatre to be performed at Falmouth Library as part of Shallal's Cornish Doorways project 2015-2018

The show began outside, playing to delighted passing audiences and then went into the lobby making use of the grand staircase and ended with scenes in the library.

Glimpses

Glimpses was originally designed for and performed at Truro Cathedral as part of the Truro Dance festival.

Some music was written for particular dancers by Roger Pinsent.

Jo King, Anna Marie Murphy and Amanda Lorens create huge orange and gold banners and also sang two songs!

It was invited to Totnes to perform for the Community of St Antony and St Elias https://www.comae.org.uk/ as well as to the John Daniel Centre, Penzance.

Chromatic

Chromatic took as it's starting point some black and white photographs from a Falmouth Art Gallery exhibition. Shallal Dance Theatre had a research visit, chose photographs to respond to and then created the show.

Working with artist Deana Holloway to create and decorate frames and explore the work in various ways.

Harry Theaker came along to watch and helped out which was the start of an ongoing supportive creative relationship...revisiting us to give valuable feedback for Ladders and Footprints and Trebah Operation Neptune film performance and site improvisations.
