Shallal Sketchbooks

Shallal Sketchbooks is an ongoing project engaging hundreds of people from across the UK and beyond who have made a sketchbook for our growing sketchbooks library.

How does it work? The idea is simple; we give you a sketchbook ( free or by donation) for you to make art in however you want. Some people have written stories, made comics, taken photographs — anything goes! It’s an opportunity to create something unique.

After three months, you send us your sketchbook to be safely housed in our travelling library, touring galleries and public spaces in Cornwall. So far, the project has reached over 15,200 people through exhibitions, events and social media. We photograph the sketchbooks and add them to our online Shallal Sketchbooks library.

Join in Shallal Sketchbooks is a project that anyone can get involved with and we would love to hear from you. We are currently hosting regular art groups on Zoom. If you would like to find out more or join, please contact us.

We would like to thank Falmouth Art Gallery for their ongoing and generous support for Shallal Sketchbooks.

Shallal Sketchbooks and social prescribing

Over the past two years we have grown links with social prescribing partners Imagine If CIC, referring artists to us from the coastal cluster primary care network of GP surgeries. This has increased during the pandemic.

Our Sketchbooks Facilitator has worked to develop a place of contact for people who are isolated and vulnerable to feel socially connected and supported to be creative at home. Many people referred from social prescribing have progressed to joining other Shallal groups and projects.

Shallal Sketchbooks is inspired by The Sketchbooks Project. To find out what our groups are up to, please visit our News.
