Rise and Fall exhibition

’Rise and Fall’ was a new body of installation work, created by Shallal Studios in partnership with Grays Wharf. Artist Janet Holland used found objects and recycled materials to create large-scale paintings which became a theatrical set in the space for performers and musicians to respond to. The audience was invited to witness Holland’s rhythmic painting process and observe the dramatically changing landscape around them.

Cornwall based artist and musician Amy Lawrence created a sound piece inspired by Holland’s working process. Featuring vibrations, the sound piece was created for Janet, who is deaf, as well as for hearing audiences. During the exhibition, Shallal dancers were invited to respond to Holland’s paintings and Lawrence’s sound piece during a live performance. The work was documented by Cornish based film-maker Lou Brett who followed Janet’s process leading up to the exhibition.

The exhibition showcased Holland’s unique ability to create large scale immersive work, while leaving potential for her to discover new ways of working in a new environment. Holland’s process is incredibly focused and fast, as she confidently uses whole tubs of paint, creating layers that she scrubs and constantly reworks, so that the compositions rapidly change through colour and mark making. This time-based project celebrated her performative working style.

We are grateful to project funders Arts Council England, Postcode Local Trust and The David Family Foundation for making this project possible.
