In 2019 our annual Back Lane West cross-art residency was called Studio Foundations
Members of Shallal's different groups come together each year to try new ideas and collaborate at Back Lane West. Shallal Studios had just moved into the studio space at Krowji, Redruth, down the road from Back Lane West and the idea was to connect Shallal Studios, Back Lane West and Shallal's dance groups together, culminating in a sharing event and a talk and pop-up performance.
Artists took part in many workshops and personal research projects resulting in shadow puppetry, large abstract work, sculpture, illustration for Shallal's poetry book, electronic music, experimental film and projections. Shallal worked with light artists Peter Freeman, who gave a talk on light art. After the talk, artists from Shallal Dance Theatre improvised in response to Peter's lights and soundscapes by George Bradley Peer.
The audience said:
Peter was a fantastic speaker, I learned so much and found it so thought provoking for my own art practice. Then to experience the dance and sound with the light directly afterwards was so mind-expanding. Thank you for an amazing, immersive, creative experience.
Very exciting, playful, really enjoyed the talk about the light before the dance as it changed the way I saw the performance.
It really broadened my understanding of light and colour which will help me with my own art practice. Thank you – a great event, professionally organised and inspiring.
